Breeding conditions

All mare owners who utilize stallions from the EU insemination station Gestüt Schafhof DE-BSE-HE-162-EWG recognize the following terms and conditions for all present and future business relationships.

The breeding season begins on March 1, 2024, and ends on July 31, 2024.

Semen Shipment

According to legal regulations, semen may only be delivered within Germany to breeders (animal owners) for the insemination of their own mares or to other insemination stations. Furthermore, the semen may also be sent to the address of a veterinarian designated by the breeder. However, the semen may only be used to inseminate the breeder’s designated mares.

The following information is required when ordering semen:

– Desired stallion

– Breeder’s full name and address

– Exact shipping address (if different from the breeder’s address)

– Mare details (name, life number, breeding certificate/ the delivered semen may only be used for the registered mare)

– Membership number of the breeding association to which the coverage is to be reported

– Veterinarian/Artificial Insemination Technician/Individual administering the semen

Orders can be placed by phone, fax, email, or via our semen order form on our website until 10:00 am (www.gestuet-schafhof.com). If ordering via the website, the order is only finalized after confirmation.

Breeding certificates must be received by us no later than after the first semen order and will be completed by us and returned to the breeder only after payment of the stud fees. They will also be forwarded to the responsible association. The costs of semen shipping are borne by the breeder. These costs are €35 on weekdays and €110 on Saturdays within Germany. No shipping is available on Sundays or public holidays, although pickup may be possible by prior arrangement. An express delivery service is available by train courier for orders placed by 9:00 am, calculated based on distance (per km).

For semen shipments abroad, significantly higher shipping costs apply. Additional fees of €30 for required health certificates are also incurred. Before the first semen shipment, payment for the insemination fee and health certificate must be made via PayPal.

Prices

All prices are exclusive of the applicable VAT rate.

Stud Fee Calculation

a.) The insemination fee of €300 is the first part of the stud fee, applicable for the first fresh semen order of our stallions and valid for the entire breeding season. This must be paid by the breeder in all cases. There is no entitlement to credits or discounts on the insemination fee. This fee becomes due upon the first insemination of your mare. The insemination fee does not cover the costs of the veterinary certificate, semen shipping, veterinarian fees, boarding, or additional services. If the fee is not paid within 14 days of receiving the invoice, we reserve the right to cease further semen deliveries. In case of non-pregnancy, the insemination fee will not be credited toward the stud fee in the following year.

b.) The second part of the respective stud fee is the pregnancy fee, due only upon proven pregnancy of the mare. The critical date is 60 days after the last insemination. Proof of non-pregnancy must be provided by the breeder with a written certificate from the attending veterinarian submitted to Gestüt Schafhof no later than October 1, 2024, without prompting. If no veterinary certificate for non-pregnancy dated no later than the 60th day of pregnancy is provided within 14 days, the pregnancy fee will automatically become due. This also applies if non-pregnancy is determined at a later date.

c.) For stallions with the “Live Foal Guarantee” option, the pregnancy fee is due within 48 hours of the foal's birth. The invoice will be issued on the 1st of the month in which the foal is expected. A breeding certificate will only be issued after full payment of the stud fee.

d.) The stud fees for the stallions Foundation and Totilas are billed through the Paul Schockemöhle breeding station. The billing is done in full.

If a stallion becomes unavailable during the breeding season due to special circumstances (e.g., competition use, illness), frozen semen may be substituted if available. The significantly higher shipping costs are borne by the breeder. A stallion change may also be requested. Any difference in stud fees must be paid by the breeder. If the alternate stud fee is lower, a credit for the next breeding season will be issued. In the event of the stallion’s death, illness, or infertility, no financial compensation is provided, but a credit in the amount of the stud fee may be applied toward selecting another stallion from the stud.

Mares

From May 1, 2024, until the end of the breeding season, mares can be accommodated at our station for artificial insemination (by prior arrangement, possibly earlier). The mare owner assures that the mare is not suffering from an infectious disease, comes from a disease-free herd, and is vaccinated against influenza, tetanus, and herpes on a regular basis. The mare will be stabled at Gestüt Schafhof, fed three times daily (2x roughage/3x concentrate feed), and will receive daily turnout, depending on weather conditions, on either sand or grass paddocks. Arrangements for individual or small-group turnout can be made with the owner. The stud is not liable for damage to the stabled horse, except in cases of intent or gross negligence on the part of the stud or its personnel. The boarding fee is €18/day, or €25/day if the mare is accompanied by a foal. The boarding fee is invoiced to the specified billing address. A swab sample (no older than six weeks) must be presented before the first insemination. Services are billed separately.

Discount System

For mares inseminated with Foundation/Totilas semen that do not become pregnant, we credit 50% of the stud fee to the breeder for the following year, provided a veterinary certificate of non-pregnancy is submitted by December 1. In cases of resorption or abortion, we grant a 30% credit of the paid stud fee (a veterinary certificate by December 1 of the current year is also required). For breeders using one or more of our stallions for more than one mare, we offer a discount of €100 for the second mare and €150 for the third mare. There is no entitlement to the payout of these discounts. Mares first inseminated after June 15 by one of our stallions (excluding Foundation & Totilas) receive a 50% discount on the insemination fee. The remaining fee will be due upon pregnancy confirmation.

Embryo Transfer (ET)/ICSI

Prior to the first insemination, the breeder must indicate if an ET/ICSI procedure is planned. Both procedures must be documented by the veterinarian, and results must be promptly forwarded to the stud. For successful ET, a veterinary certificate of non-pregnancy of the donor mare must be submitted. If the donor mare is inseminated again after ET, a new stud fee applies. In case of non-pregnancy, resorption, or abortion of the donor or recipient mare, the conditions for non-pregnancy of the mare apply. A stud fee is charged for each successfully transferred embryo.

Frozen Semen

The purchase and payment for frozen semen are made on a per-dose basis. The purchase of frozen semen from Foundation/Totilas is handled by our partner station, Paul Schockemöhle (Mühlen). The purchase of frozen semen from Totilas is tied to inseminating the mare at the Paul Schockemöhle breeding station. A maximum of three doses per mare are sold.

The purchase of frozen semen from all other available stallions is handled directly through us. Expect higher costs for shipping, etc., compared to fresh semen shipping. These conditions are intended solely for breeders. The contracting party is Gestüt Schafhof. Contracts for semen orders are subject to German law, and the place of jurisdiction is Königstein/Ts., Germany.
